The Sepoy Revolt.
Its Causes and its Consequences.
London: John Murray, 1857 Stock Code: 127447
First editon. "According to Chaudhuri this is one of the, if not the, earliest work on the Mutiny" (Sorsky). Mead, who worked as a journalist in India for ten years, was very critical of the East India Company and British actions in India, though not the colonial project as a whole. "If Heaven had not great work for us to do in the East, the cruelty, the oppression, and the measureless folly of our rule would before this have produced its natural fruits, and we should have been cast out from India, a scorn and example to the nations" (p. iv).
