Notes

First edition, signed limited issue, association copy, with the ownership inscription of Jazz Age lyricist Ira Gershwin to the front free endpaper. Ira Gershwin often collaborated with his younger brother, George, starting with Lady, be Good, in 1924. George Gershwin is mentioned numerous times throughout the book, with his portrait facing page 92, and Seldes stating that "delicacy, even dreaminess, is a quality he alone brings into jazz music" (p. 92). Seldes, who has been described as "a champion of Gerswhin", served as an editor and drama critic of The Dial, wrote and adapted for Broadway, and in 1958 hosted the NBC show The Subject is Jazz (Oja, p. 659). This highly influential work sought to apply intelligent criticism to popular culture and arts that were commonly seen as low-brow. In it Seldes discusses acts such as Charlie Chaplin, Fanny Price and Krazy Kat. This copy is number 25 of 300 copies signed by the author and bound in javanese batik.
