The Sign of Four.London, Spencer Blackett. 1890 Stock Code: 48026
NotesFirst edition. This copy has both internal issue points, "138" on the contents page is incomplete and appears as "13" and "wishes" is misspelt on p.56 as "w shed". However, these issue points are present in both the first and second issue of the first edition, the only way of determining between the two issues is by the binding. The second issue was reissued by Griffith Farran and Company, with the original title page. The covers are also the same except for the imprint at the foot of the spine which reads "Griffith Farran and Cos/ Standard/ Library". As this copy has been rebound it is not possible to distinguish whether it is a first or second issue of the first edition. This copy is bound without the publishers' catalogue found in some first edition copies.
Octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in red morocco, titles and decoration to spine gilt, raised bands, single rule to boards gilt, twin rule to turn-ins gilt, dark green endpapers, gilt edges.
With frontispiece by Charles Kerr.
Very occasional spotting to text leaves, otherwise an excellent copy in a fine binding.
