The Small Bachelor.London: Methuen & Co. Ltd, 1927 Stock Code: 126456
First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Betty Askwith, with the author's compliments, P. G. Wodehouse June 1927". It is rare to find a signed or inscribed copy. Betty Askwith (1909-1995), the only daughter of the first Lord Askwith and Ellen Graham, published her first book of poems in 1928 at the age of 19 and went on to write, with Theodora Benson, the humorous work Muddling through: or, Britain in a nutshell (1936). The Small Bachelor was based upon a book that Wodehouse and Guy Bolton wrote for the musical Oh, Lady! Lady!, which premiered in Albany, New York on 7 January 1918.
Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine and front cover lettered in black.
Pencil ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Spine darkened and gently rolled, spine and extremities rubbed, spine ends and tips a little worn, covers a little marked and soiled, edges and first few pages a little foxed, mild offsetting to free endpapers, gauze strip visible in gutters of a couple of openings, text block sound. A very good copy.
