Notes

First edition, first printing. Parsons (1902-1979) was a pioneering figure in American Sociology. In 1951, he published his two most significant theoretical works almost simultaneously: Towards a General Theory of Action and The Social System. The former studied the interdependence of the cultural system, the personality system, and the social system, whereas the present volume offered a systematic analysis of the structure and functioning of social systems. "Together they comprise one of the most important and far-reaching theoretical statements of twentieth-century social thought" (Treviño, The Anthem Companion to Talcott Parsons, 2016).
