First edition, limited issue, number 142 of 1,000 copies printed. This is the rarer first state, with illustrated endpapers, of which Grissom notes there were 50 to 100 copies printed; the second state had plain paper endpapers and Jasper Wood's printed disclaimer on the rear pastedown. The alteration took place after Hemingway protested about the display of the F.A.I banner on the endpapers; he also requested that all proceeds from the book go to Almuth Heilbrun, the widow of Dr Werner Heilbrun, who was killed in action at Huesca in 1937.
