Preceded by Five Children and It and The Phoenix and the Carpet, Nesbit's time-travelling narrative is notable for including a trip into the future, featuring Nesbit's vision of a socialist utopia in which H. G. Wells is venerated as a reformer. Nesbit was one of the founding members of the Fabian Society in 1884.
