The Tale of Mr. Tod.London and New York: Frederick Warne and Co., 1912 Stock Code: 147934
First edition; the first two impressions are identical. The Tale of Mr. Tod is the 18th book by Beatrix Potter.
Warne intended this to be the start of a new series in a slightly different format, thicker and more elaborately bound than Potter's previous books. Potter was unconvinced by the new format, asking Warne: "Do you really think the advantage of an entirely fresh series will make up for the loss of the 'Peter Rabbit book' name? I feel convinced that people will prefer the same familiar size, and as little change as may be."
Sextodecimo. Original grey boards, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in green, colour pictorial onlay to front cover, colour pictorial endpapers.
With 15 colour plates, including frontispiece, and black and white illustrations to the text, all by the author.
Bookseller's ticket to front free endpaper verso, contemporary gift inscription to half-title. A very good copy indeed, spine lightly browned, a couple of bumps to spine ends, light foxing to first and last few pages, contents otherwise clean and free from marks.
Linder, p. 429; Quinby 21.
