The Tempers.
London: Elkin Matthews, 1913 Stock Code: 142738
First edition, first impression, rare early presentation copy inscribed by Williams on the front free endpaper, "L. T. G. from William Carlos Williams 4/14/19". The recipient was Leroy Truman Goble, identified by his illustrated book plate for "The Gobles" designed by Franz von Baryos to the front pastedown. Goble was an American photographer and amateur painter, and a prominent figure on the Chicago literary scene around this time, befriending the likes of Carl Sandburg and Sherwood Anderson.
The Tempers was Williams's second collection, published in London with the support of Ezra Pound, at the time of his close involvement with the Imagist movement. Early presentation copies from Williams are rare - for this title the earliest dated that we can trace in auction records was to the poet Robert McAlmon, in 1924.
Description
16mo. Original boards, titles gilt to spine and front.
Condition
