First UK edition, first impression of this collection of stories marking the second appearance of Augustus S. F. X. Van Dusen after The Chase of the Golden Plate (1906), and the first in which in which the detective "was allowed full scope to perform his feats of mental wizardry" (Quayle). The Thinking Machine was first published in the US earlier the same year by Dodd.

Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in white, pictorial device and titles blocked to front board in black and white.

Condition

Contemporary ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Lightly rubbed overall, spine and portion of front board sunned, corners bumped, top edge dust-darkened, endleaves tanned. A very good copy.
