The Topography of Rome and Its Vicinity.
A New Edition, Revised and Enlarge by Edward Herbert Bunbury, Esq., F.C.S.London: Henry G. Bohn, 1846 Stock Code: 141159
Revised and enlarged edition of this work originally published in 1834. William Gell (1777-1836) "represented the culmination of the literary topographical tradition. Written when Greece and even Italy were comparatively little known to English travellers and classical students, his works were for some time regarded as standard treatises, and much of the information they contain is still of value" (ODNB).
Octavo. Original pale green cloth, titles to spine gilt, ornamental panelling to spine and boards in blind, pale yellow endpapers.
Folding frontispiece map, 3 maps, 2 plates, of which 1 folding, and occasional line drawings to text.
Partially unopened. Bookplate of Baron Northwick to front pastedown, of Robert J. Hayhurst to front free endpaper, binder's ticket to rear pastedown. Spine slightly sunned, a few minor dark marks to cloth, front endpaper with a few small closed tears along the inner hinge, mild spotting to plates, text block strained between pp. 224-5. Nonetheless an excellent, internally bright copy.
