First edition, first printing, Ezra Pound's copy of Hemingway's first novel, with his autograph ownership inscription "Ezra Pound, his book, and blast them as don't return it" on the front free endpaper.
Pound was a key mentor for Hemingway during Hemingway's years as an expatriate and debut writer in Paris in the early 1920s. Pound had been introduced to Hemingway by Sherwood Anderson through Gertrude Stein, and was the editor of his first collection of stories, In Our Time (Paris: Three Mountains Press, 1924). The Torrents of Spring, Hemingway's first full-length novel, was a satire of Sherwood Anderson and the clique of American writers that Hemingway deemed pretentious. Hemingway wrote to Pound that he "had written 'a funny book'... Probably unprintable but funny as hell Wrote it to destroy Sherwood and various others It's first really adult thing have done. Jesus Christ it is funny It is a regular novel only it shows up all the fakes of Anderson, Gertrude, Lewis, Cather, Hergo Joseph Hergesheimer and all the rest of the pretentious faking bastards I don't see how Sherwood will ever be able to write again" (Mellow, Hemingway, 317-320).
The later blind stamp on the title page "Brunnenburg, Tirolo (Merano) Italia" marks this copy as having made its way into the Brunnenburg castle library, where many of Pound's books ended up. Pound stayed at Brunnenburg, the home (with Olga Rudge) of his daughter Mary de Rachewiltz in northern Italy, following his release from incarceration in St Elizabeth's hospital in 1958; he wrote the last of his Cantos there.
