First edition. Ellis was commissioned second lieutenant in the 1st West India Regiment in November 1873 and accompanied them to the Second Ashante war later that year. "This was the beginning of a long connection with west Africa" (ODNB), serving in many different capacities, military and civil. "Ellis was an able and ambitious soldier But of some sixteen years spent in west Africa, hardly more than six months were occupied in active service in the interior. Most of his time was spent at Cape Coast, Freetown, and other coastal stations. Here he organized himself to enlarge his own restricted first-hand knowledge by systematically collecting information - from local informants and newspapers and from books - about the African countries he had seen, and the ethnology, history, and languages of their inhabitants. This information was used for the writing of ten books published in London between 1881 and 1894 Despite the continual expression in them of his personal dislikes and prejudices, for thirty or forty years after Ellis's death these were regarded as standard works." Ink stamp of the library of Charles James Tabor to the verso of front free endpaper. A doctor and fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Tabor's "Valuable and Extensive Library" of "Anthropology, Folk-lore... Egyptology, Oriental and General Travel, Manuscripts, Incunabula, Old Bibles " was sold at Hodgson's Rooms in 1928.

Photogravure map.

A little rubbed and soiled, small paper shelf-labels to the spine, hinges just a touch cracked, light browning, but a very nice copy.
