The Two Voices. Poems of the Mountains and the Sea.Boston: Joseph Knight Company, Publishers, 1886 Stock Code: 143481
First edition, scarce Boston imprint, in the very rare dust jacket, of this handsome concept-anthology put together by Harvard-educated poet and clergyman John White Chadwick (1840-1904), published in the year after he was elected the Phi Beta Kappa poet.
The Two Voices aligns a wide range of poets ancient and modern to enthuse on either side of the age-old dichotomy: "Mountains or Sea?" This is the scarce Boston issue, in the more handsome cloth, as opposed to the more common and drab New York version by Nims (the copyright is by Nims & Knight). OCLC records some 32 copies of the Nims issue, and only five of Knight's. Whatever the issue, copies that do turn up are usually in poor condition, and this copy, with the rare 19th-century jacket preserving the lovely moiré silk boards, is exceptional.
Duodecimo. Original white quarter cloth, spine with titles and marine decoration in gilt, floral-patterned moiré silk sides, dark blue coated endpapers, gilt edges. With the dust jacket.
Corners just gently bumped, otherwise a fine copy in the dust jacket with slight dust soiling and spotting, and gentle rubbing at the extremities.
