The War of Atonement.Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1975 Stock Code: 148288
First US edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the title page: "For William Safire, in appreciation. Chaim Herzog".
William Safire (1929-2009) was a long-time political columnist for The New York Times, and winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2006. He became friends with Herzog, and hosted him for dinners in New York. Safire was staunchly pro-Israel, and received the Guardian of Zion Award from Bar-Ilan University in 2005. President George W. Bush appointed him to serve on the Honorary Delegation to accompany him to Jerusalem, for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel in May 2008.
With a typed letter signed from Herzog presenting the book, 9 November 1976: "Dear Mr. Safire, It was a pleasure meeting you at the party at the 21 Club. As promised herewith my book, and also the one chapter that is missing in the English edition. I hope you enjoy it. Please call me so that we can have lunch when you are in New York. With best wishes. Yours sincerely Chaim Herzog". With the aforementioned chapter loosely inserted, offprinted from Moment, October 1975. A copy of a letter from Netanyahu to Safire (1999) is also inserted.
Chaim Herzog (1918-1997) had served in the Israel Defense Forces, retiring in 1962 with the rank of Major-General. He later served as President of Israel between 1983 and 1993. The present book is his account of the Yom Kippur War, published only two years after the event, and remains one of the most authoritative accounts of the conflict. It was also published in Jerusalem the same year.
