First edition of this extensive history of the Mexican-American War in which Ripley served; he was brevetted captain for gallantry at the battle of Cerro Gordo and major "meritorious conduct" at the battle of Chapultepec. Ripley took military leave from 1848 to 1849 to complete this work, "considered by some the best of the early histories".
