NotesThe Atlantic Edition, deluxe issue bound in half morocco, number 618 of 1,050 sets signed by the author in volume I. "The text throughout is read and revised by the author, who has written a special preface to each volume as well as a general introduction to the set" (Wells, p. 61). Scribners offered the set in regular cloth bindings but also as here in a spectacular binding done by the best American binders of their day. It was also issued in a red morocco binding, with no priority between the two colours.
28 volumes, octavo. Bound for the publisher by Stikeman & Co. in blue half morocco, titles and floral decoration to spines gilt, two raised bands, blue cloth boards, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, others untrimmed.
Bookplate to front pastedowns, 18 volumes expertly rebacked, still an excellent set attractively bound.
