Elegant Georgian bindingA highly attractive set of Alexander Pope's writings. Before his death Pope began the task of bringing together and editing his collected works, with his friend William Warburton finishing the project and seeing it through the press in 1751.
9 volumes, octavo (211 x 129 mm). Contemporary calf, twin red morocco labels to smooth spines, top labels lettered in gilt direct, bottom labels lettered in gilt on brown morocco onlays, gilt motifs to compartments, gilt roll-tooled border to covers, marbled endpapers, yellow edges, green silk bookmarks.
With 24 engraved plates.
Ownership signature dated 1826 to front free endpapers. Chip at head of spine of vol. III, extremities very lightly rubbed, a few tiny marks to covers, yet overall a near-fine set, with all hinges intact and with the contents and plates clean and bright.
