Watts (19151973), each volume with his self-designed esoterically illustrated bookplate, including the biblical motto "pulsate et aperietur vobis" ("knock, and it shall be opened to you"). Watts was a highly significant early popularizer of Zen Buddhism in the Western world.
4 volumes, octavo (170 x 106 mm). Finely bound by Zaehnsdorf for McClurg in red polished full calf, spines gilt in compartments with dark red morocco title labels gilt, sides bordered with double gilt rule, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt.
Engraved frontispiece and vignette half-title to each volume, and an engraved portrait plate in vol. one.
Minor nicks to extremities, but an excellent set, smart, sound, and clean within.
