The Works.Edinburgh & London, William Blackwood and Sons, [c.1880] Stock Code: 138206
NotesThe Cabinet edition. This handsome set includes Eliot's seven novels and other literary works including, The Spanish Gypsy and Scenes of Clerical Life. Four volumes, which include the Life of George Eliot, were published later for the Cabinet Edition, but are not present in this set.
Eliot's novels were popular for their political views and depiction of rural society for which she drew on her own early experience. However, Eliot did not confine herself to her bucolic roots. Romola is a historical romance set in late 15th century Florence and The Spanish Gypsy, a poem she wrote after a visit to Spain in 1867, both reflecting her wider reading and interests. Whilst Eliot's verse was not so well received, the popularity of her novels has endured. Middlemarch is still considered one of the greatest English novels and has been described by Virginia Woolf as "the magnificent book that, with all its imperfections, is one of the few English novels written for grown-up people."
20 volumes, octavo (190 x 123 mm). Contemporary red half morocco, gilt titles and panels to spines, raised bands, marbled sides and endpapers, top edges gilt.
Contemporary bookplate to front pastedown of each volume. Spines slightly darkened, occasional mild wear to extremities, endpapers foxed, otherwise internally clean and presenting well. A very good set.
