The Works.London: Chapman & Hall, 1874-76 Stock Code: 138660
An attractively bound complete set of Dickens's works with a commemorative British "Charles Dickens" postage stamp pasted to the front free endpaper of each volume. As part of the Charles Dickens Centenary celebrated in 1912, a London Committee was established to collect funds for the benefit of the author's descendants. The committee, which included US President Roosevelt, released the set of privately printed stamps at one shilling each and features Dicken's portrait beneath the words: "A tribute to genius".
30 volumes, octavo (220 x 135 mm). Contemporary green half crushed morocco, gilt titles and elaborate decoration to spines in compartments, raised bands, cloth boards, marbled endpapers and edges.
With the original black and white illustrations.
Bookplate to front free endpapers; stamps to front free endpapers of 19 volumes; newspaper clipping tipped in to front pastedown of David Copperfield vol. 1. Spines a little faded and bruised at ends, tips rubbed and bumped, some minor scuff marks to boards, some hinges cracked but still holding, foxing to first and last few leaves, otherwise internally bright and presenting well. A very good set.
