Including the Suppressed Poems. Complete in One Volume.Paris: A. and W. Galignani, 1831 Stock Code: 140256
NotesAn elegantly bound copy of Byron's poetical works. The French binder Joseph Thouvenin (17901834) was well-known for producing bindings in an "historical" style.
Galignani's Paris editions of the English poets were piracies (he also pirated Crabbe, Hazlitt, Washington Irving, Thomas Moore, Walter Scott, and Southey among others), but carefully done. Wordsworth admitted that Galignani's edition of his poems "is printed with admirable accuracy, I have not noticed a single error that I am not myself answerable for".
Quarto (230 x 141 mm). Bound by Thouvenin in red calf, titles to spine gilt, spine and boards richly embossed, turn-ins richly gilt, marbled edges and endpapers.
Engraved frontispiece portrait, folded facsimile letter from Byron to Galignani.
Contemporary ownership inscription to half-title, modern gift inscription to front flyleaf. Boards gently bowed, extremities a touch rubbed, foxing and occasional heavy spotting throughout text block, text block cracked between frontispiece and title page, but holding firm. A very good copy.
