Edited with a scrupulous revision of the text by Charles and Mary Cowden Clarke.London: Bickers & Son, 1883 Stock Code: 141760
NotesA notably attractive set of the Cowden Clarkes' edited works of Shakespeare. Mary Cowden Clarke (1809-1898) "felt particular 'pride and gratification'" in having edited the works of Shakespeare "as it made her 'the first (and as yet, only) woman editor of our great poet'" (ODNB). This edition, credited to both Charles and Mary, was first published by Bickers in 1864.
4 volumes, octavo (218 x 142 mm). Contemporary vellum, smooth spines elaborately tooled in compartments, triple morocco labels in green and brown, twin rule to boards, marbled endpapers, edges stained red.
Title pages printed in red and black. Engraved frontispiece portrait to volume I, and lithographic plates throughout.
Some mild scattered foxing, spines slightly tanned and boards a little marked. An excellent set.
Jaggard, pp. 534, 537, & 542.
