The Works.New York: D. Appleton & Company, Stock Code: 147024
The Author's edition, limited to 1,000 numbered copies of which this is number 241 with an autograph letter signed by Doyle and dated 4.2.04 tipped to the binder's front blank in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. A rare US issue which, unlike the UK edition, includes The Hound of the Baskervilles. A handsome set.
The author wanted a set that contained only the works for which he wanted to be credited, as he states in the preface: "Outside of this edition there is no work of mine up to this date which I do not willingly suppress."
13 volumes, octavo (202 x 130 mm). Finely bound by Frost and Co. in contemporary crimson calf, blue and tan calf labels, elaborate tooling to spines gilt separated by raised bands, twin rule to boards with cornerpieces gilt, inner dentelles gilt, gilt edges.
Trivial marks to a couple of boards with some minor partial fading, two author labels slightly scratched, joints to one volume slightly rubbed, pages nice and clean. An excellent set.
