The Works in Verse and Prose.
Now first brought together with many pieces before not published. Edited with prefaces notes and appendices by Harry Buxton Forman. In eight volumes.London: Reeves and Turner, 1880 Stock Code: 130740
NotesFirst edition thus, bringing together Buxton Forman's 1876-7 edition of Shelley's Poetical works and his 1880 edition of Shelley's Prose works. Buxton Forman, the notorious bibliographical forger, nevertheless "produced impressive editions of Shelley and Keats... by channelling a general enthusiasm into a minute study of textual details, for which his careful and exacting temperament was ideally suited" (ODNB). Complete sets of this edition are notably uncommon.
8 volumes, octavo (216 x 140 mm). Contemporary red morocco, titles to spines in gilt in compartments, floral designs to spines in gilt, raised bands tooled in gilt, single rule frames in gilt to sides, grey endpapers, top edges gilt.
Tipped-in advert leaf for Keats's Love Letters to front of vol. I. Engraved frontispiece to each volume, 13 plates, and a large folding genealogical table.
Bookplate of Henry Harvey Frost to the front pastedown of vol. I, ownership inscription in pencil to head of half-title of vol. II. Spine uniformly faded, touch of wear to spine ends and tips, a couple of faint scratches to covers, top edges a little dusty, occasional light offsetting to endpapers; a very good, handsome, set.
