Notes

Signed limited edition, number 48 of 265 copies signed by the author and specially bound, with an original onlay motif of a Shakespearean theatre designed by Zaehnsdorf. Originally published in 1970 by Jonathan Cape under the title Shakespeare. Burgess wrote a number of works inspired by Shakespeare, including a fictionalised version of Shakespeare's life in Nothing Like the Sun (1964), in which he "creates, with true tenderness, a possessed, bisexual Shakespeare", and an unmade film script, Will!, a Hollywood musical about Shakespeare (ODNB). Burgess also adapted Greek, Russian, and French plays, notably Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac, for the Royal Shakespeare Company.
