The Writings.New York, Gabriel Wells, 1925 Stock Code: 116018
NotesThe handsomely produced "Large Paper Edition", this being number 254 of 575 sets, put out by the celebrated New York bookseller Gabriel Wells who, during the 1920s, competed in the sale rooms with the great Rosenbach. This edition, with introductory material by W. B. Yeats, Padraic Colum, John Drinkwater, Arthur Symons, and Wilde's one-time lover Richard Le Gallienne, was originally issued by Doubleday in 1923 as the hyperbolically titled Patron's Edition de Luxe; a few minor corrections were made for this edition. A most attractive set.
12 volumes, octavo (219 x 140 mm). Contemporary purple morocco, spines gilt lettered direct and with gilt foliate decoration, two-line gilt border on sides enclosing an elaborate foliate and triple-line gilt panel, broad turn-ins and red morocco doublures with gilt foliate cornerpieces, red moire silk endpapers, top edge gilt, untrimmed.
Title pages printed in pale blue and black, each carrying a profile portrait of Wilde in pale blue.
Spines uniformly lightly sunned to brown, a few leaves with small tears at fore-edge. An excellent set.
