Notes

First edition of this important contribution to Walras's monetary theory, in fine condition, the final text in a contemporary sammelband of six related works on bimetallism. The ideas in Théorie de la monnaie would be revisited and fully developed in the fourth edition of Walras's Eléments d'économie politique pure, published fourteen years later. Schumpeter believed that "as far as pure theory is concerned, Walras is in my opinion the greatest of all economists" (Blaug, Great Economists Before Keynes, p. 264), arguing that the "outstanding purely analytic performance on bimetallism is that of Walras" in Eléments (History of Economic Analysis, p. 1076).
The preceding works in the volume date from 1886 to 1891:
i) MIRBACH-SORQUITTEN, Graf von. Währungspolitische Betrachtungen. Berlin: Walther & Apolant, 1891. 16 pp. First edition, by a leading proponent of bimetallism in Germany. WorldCat locates four in Germany and just one other, in the US (Duke). Allgemeine Bibliographie 1891, p. 204.
ii) BERGER, Paul. Doppelwährung und Landwirtschaft. Hamburg: A.G. (formerly F. F. Richter), 1891. 32 pp. First edition. WorldCat locates twelve copies total (eight in Germany, two in Switzerland, one apiece in the Netherlands and France).
iii) CERNUSCHI, Henri. Das bimetallische Pari. (Der Gold- und Silber-Commission in London unterbreitete Bemerkungen.) Cologne: J. P. Bachem, 1887. 44 pp. First edition in German, translated from Le pair bimétallique, published the same year. The renowned French banker Cernuschi was best known for his works on bimetallism, of which he was a key advocate. WorldCat locates eighteen copies.
iv) MELCHERS, Karl. Die geschichtliche Entwicklung des Geldwesens und der gegenwärtige Währungsstreit. Varel an der Jade: Bültmann & Gerriets Nachfolger, 1886. V, 102, 1 pp. First edition; anonymously published, the preface signed "K.M." WorldCat locates one copy only, in the British Library. LSE has a copy of the second edition.
Heft 14-15. Berlin: Walther & Apolant, 1889. First part: 8, 117, 3. Second and third: 8, 184 pp. First edition, complete in three parts as issued. WorldCat locates approximately thirteen copies, in Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.
