NotesFirst complete German translation of Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments, the second German translation overall, volume two providing a translation of the additional material contained in the English 6th edition, published shortly before Smith's death in 1790. The first German translation of 1770 was made from the third edition of 1767. "The Kosegarten translation of 1791 had more impact than the 1770 one partly because of its timing and also because it did provide some contextualisation for work and author" (Tribe).
2 parts bound in one octavo volume (197 x 120 mm). Contemporary half sheep and sprinkled boards, spine ruled gilt in compartments, morocco spine label, edges stained red.
Corners and extremities slightly rubbed, occasional light spotting; an excellent copy.
