From one American laureate to anotherFirst edition, first printing, inscribed by the author to fellow poet William S. Merwin (b. 1927), "To William Merwin, with warm regards, Robert Penn Warren" on the first blank. Merwin's poetic career began in 1952 with A Mask for Janus - he went on to win two Pulitzer Prizes for poetry and in 2010 was named 17th Poet Laureate of the United States. Penn Warren had been the first, so named in 1986. Thirty-Six Poems was only his second published collection, after John Brown (1929).
Octavo. In the white card jacket printed in black, as issued, with the original glassine wrapper.
