Notes

First edition, first impression. Commissioned by Gollancz, who wrote to Pethick-Lawrence (former Financial Secretary to the Treasury under the second Labour government) on 31 August 1931 with an outline of the book, which offers a lucid explanation of the political and financial crisis of that summer. It was swiftly produced in time for the October general election, though it did not have the desired effect. In the wake of the Labour Party's defeat, Gollancz wrote to Pethick-Lawrence apologetically, stating that the book was "practically boycotted by the booksellers, who are always Tory; and the advertising produced little result... The most tragic part of the whole business is that the public doesn't appear to want to know" (Ruth Dudley Edwards, Victor Gollancz: A Biography, 2012, p. 209). From the publisher's archive.
