First edition edited by the Scottish writer and churchman George Gilfillan (1813-1878). This copy was given as an Eton leaving present in 1862 and is inscribed on a preliminary blank: "William Thomas Trench, with the best wishes of Adelbert Cecil Talbot". Trench would appear to be the future Earl of Clancarty and Talbot became a colonel and Resident in the Gulf (September 1891-May 1893), see H. Rahman, The Emergence of Qatar: The Turbulent Years 1627-1916 (2010, p. 112 onwards).
Octavo (213 x 131 mm). Contemporary full calf, richly gilt spine, brown morocco label, two-line gilt border on sides, marbled edges and endpapers.
Label chipped, hinges split at foot but sound. A handsomely bound copy.
