Tides.London: Sidgwick & Jackson, Ltd, 1917 Stock Code: 134237
First trade edition, first impression, the dedication copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title verso "To Sir Ian Hamilton from John Drinkwater 1917". Drinkwater dedicates the book to General Sir Ian Hamilton with the dedicatory stanza "because the darling chivalries, / that light your battle-line, belong / to music's heart no less than these, / I bring you my campaigns of song". Hamilton had commanded the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in the Gallipoli campaign, but was recalled to London after the campaign's failure, effectively ending his military career. Drinkwater's dedication of Tides, predominantly a collection of war poetry, can perhaps be seen as a show of support for the disgraced commander. Drinkwater had published 19 of 34 poems earlier that same year under the same title with the Beaumont Press.
