First edition, first issue, of Voltaire's famous plea for religious toleration, inspired by the trial of Jean Calas in 1762. Fired by his hatred of intolerance and injustice, he carried on to a successful issue his campaign for the rehabilitation of Jean Calas, a Huguenot executed in 1762 on a false charge of murdering his son because the latter wished to become a Roman Catholic. In 1765 the verdict was quashed and Calas's innocence established by the Conseil d'état.
With the ownership inscription of Madame de Courny, a friend of Thomas Jefferson, and member of his "coterie" in Paris, "a position she achieved by her natural charm and spirit" according to Gilbert Chinard in his work "Trois amitiés françaises de Jefferson."
