NotesSecond edition, first published 1809. An artistic prodigy, admitted to the Academy at the age of fifteen, Porter made his reputation as a painter of spectacular battle scenes and panoramas. In 1804 he was invited to Russia to join the tsar's court as historical painter, being employed in decorating Admiralty Hall, St Petersburg with vast historical paintings. Between 1806 and 1811 he travelled Europe visiting Finland, Sweden and Germany before joining Sir John Moore for the campaign in the Peninsula.
2 volumes quarto (287 x 229 mm). Contemporary half diced russia, drab boards, title gilt direct to spine, gilt rules forming compartments which are blind-tooled.
Folding tinted aquatint frontispiece to volume I, and 10 other tinted aquatints, 28 hand-coloured aquatint costume plates, 2 of them folding, etched portrait of Gustavus Vasa.
A little rubbed at the extremities, some offsetting from the plates as often, but an attractive copy.
