A crucial 19th-century work on South Africa

Second edition; same year as the first. One of the most valuable works on South Africa published in the early nineteenth century, the present work was written by George Thompson, a British merchant living in Cape Town for many years as the representative of a British company. Between 1823 and 1824, he set out to explore the north-eastern parts of the Cape colony, "partly from motives of business, partly from the impulse of curiosity" (Preface, p.viii), travelling to the Orange River and onwards to Kuruman. The account of these travels, "ghost-written by Thomas Pringle, provides valuable descriptions of the geography, history and natural history" of the region (Howgego).
