Notes

First and sole edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the verso of the front wrapper, "Ian Hope Simpson, Robert Graves, 1925". John Barclay (Ian) Hope Simpson (1905-1989) was the son of Sir John Hope Simpson, British Liberal politician and author of the first global history of the modern refugee. In the year this work was inscribed, Robert Graves graduated from St John's College, Oxford. It is possible that, while there, his path crossed with Ian Hope Simpson who was studying at Worcester College at the time. Ian Hope Simpson went on to become a history master at Rugby School and deposited the family papers at Balliol College shortly before his death.
This is Graves's first book of poetry after demobilisation following the First World War, and is one of just 200 copies printed and privately distributed.
