Typed letter signed, regarding the October Crisis.22 November 1970 Stock Code: 141419
Typed letter signed from the Canadian author Hugh Maclennan to Ray Gardner (1919-1997), journalist and editor at the Toronto Star. Maclennan writes in response to a request by Gardner for an article in response to the October Crisis (the kidnapping of Pierre Laporte by the Front de libération du Québec). Maclennan politely rejects the offer to write an article, noting that he has turned down 9 similar invitations. "I did, however, spent some time working out my own under-lying interpretation of a situation very obscure, mostly because I had received a number of letters from post-graduate students saying that now, suddenly, they understood the meaning of my last novel Return of the Sphinx" - a novel based around the Quebec liberation movement of the 1960s. Maclennan wrote an article on the subject, The Telegram, intended for use in a book of essays, finding yesterday that the article was printed without his knowledge. Its length however would make it inappropriate for publication in the Star.
Single sheet, on Maclennan's McGill University letterhead.
Light creasing, faint soiling, tiny chip at one edge; still in very good condition.
