Typed letter signed to former Labour MP Arthur Lewis, in response to a suggestion to recognize Manny Shinwell's birthday.
24 July 1984 Stock Code: 145686
Margaret Thatcher writes to former Labour MP Arthur Lewis: "Dear Arthur, Thank you for your letter of 20th July. What you suggest is a charming and original idea and certainly worth pursuing. We are looking into the possibility of some formal recognition of Manny Shinwell's 100th birthday and will hope to reach a conclusion on the matter in time for the resumption of Parliament in the autumn. Yours ever Margaret".
Lewis (1917-1998) was a Labour MP from 1945 to 1983, a tenure of nearly four decades over three constituencies. On the right of the Labour Party, he was deselected by his constituency party members in early 1983, and lost his seat in that year's General Election, failing to win as an Independent Labour candidate. His tenure in the Commons overlapped with that of Manny Shinwell (1884-1986), a long serving Labour MP who unseated Ramsay Macdonald in 1935, and served as Secretary of State for War and Defence in the second Attlee Ministry.
