Notes

The letter written by Margaret Thatcher in response to Dame Elaine Kellett-Bowman's letter of condolence, on the occasion of the death of her husband Denis in 2003. Thatcher writes in her customary blue ink "Dear Elaine, it was so good of you and Edward to write. Yours ever, Margaret", with the typed letter, dated 23 July 2003, reading "Thank you so much for your kind message. For over fifty years, Denis was the most loving and supportive husband and his death leaves an emptiness in my life which can never be filled. I have been deeply touched by all the warm tributes to him and the thoughtful messages of sympathy. They are a great comfort at this sad time". Dame Elaine Kellett-Bowman had severed as MP for Lancaster from 1970 to 1997, and as MEP for Cumbria from 1979 to 1984. Her husband Edward Kellett-Bowman also served as MEP from 1979 to 1984, and from 1988 to 1999. Both were firm supporters of Thatcher.
