Ulysses.Paris, Shakespeare & Co., 1922 Stock Code: 130581
NotesFirst edition, first printing, number 228 of 150 large paper copies numbered between 101 and 250. With its generous margins, this large paper format is the most aesthetically pleasing of the three issues in which Ulysses was published.
In imitation of the traditional French manner aimed at both connoisseurs and readers, 100 copies were printed on Dutch handmade paper and signed by Joyce; 150 copies were printed on heavier vergé d'Arches to create this large paper format; and the remaining 750 copies formed a small format trade issue, printed on less expensive vergé à barbes stock.
Quarto in eights (256 x 200 mm). Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in greenish blue morocco, titles and decoration to spine gilt, raised bands, twin rule to boards gilt, Greek key to turn-ins gilt, japan vellum doublures, original wrappers bound in at front and back, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Housed in a matching leather entry slipcase.
Mild partial toning and offsetting to original binder's blanks, an excellent copy in a fine binding.
