V. R. Lang: a Memoir.[privately printed], Munich , 1959 Stock Code: 109603
NotesFirst and limited edition of Lurie's first book, 300 copies were printed. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the half-title: "For Wong, Alison Lurie". The character "Walter Wong" appears in Lurie's novel The Nowhere City (1965). "One of Lurie's first projects when she began to write again following two unpublished novels and the birth of her three children was a memoir of her Poets' Theatre friend V. R. (Bunny) Lang, who had died of cancer in 1956. It was published privately in 1959. 'I wrote it because I was afraid I would forget all that stuff and I wanted some sort of record... Some friends got 200 copies sic printed in Europe and we sent them out. Someone then sent a copy to an editor in New York, who wrote to me asking if I had a novel. But if the photocopy hadn't been invented, who knows, I might never have been published'" (The Guardian online).
Octavo. Original pictorial wrappers with cover design by Edward Gorey. With the glassine dust jacket.
A few tears to glassine jacket, light offsetting from rear wrapper to endpaper. An excellent copy.
