Vathek.A Londres, Chez Clarke, New Bond Street, 1815 Stock Code: 132255
NotesFirst French-language edition to be published in England, first issue (later issues have a Mount Street address for Clarke); third edition in French overall. Beckford's oriental novel, Vathek, was written in French between January and May 1782, and published in Lausanne in December 1786 (though postdated 1787). It was beaten to the press by the English translation by Samuel Henley, published first in June 1786, despite Beckford's express wish that the French edition should precede it. Beckford did not entirely disavow Henley's version but thereafter effectively treated the French and English versions as distinct entities.
Octavo (181 x 124 mm). Contemporary calf, sides with thick-and-thin gilt rule border enclosing paired drawer-handle tools in blind, neatly rebacked and corners restored, marbled endpapers, gilt edges.
Engraved frontispiece by Isaac Taylor, engraved title page.
Edges a little worn, a very good copy.
