Verses.Duckworth & Co., London , 1910 Stock Code: 104936
NotesFirst edition, first impression, inscribed by the author with a holograph draft of "Sonnet XXIV", later published in his Sonnets and Verse (1923), on the front free endpaper. This copy comes from the collection of historian and auctioneer Anthony Hobson (1921-2014), who according to a laid-in note in his hand, judged this to be a pre-publication draft: "probably written in 1911 (see date at top left corner of front pastedown). Not included in Verses 1910... There are differences of punctuation also". Hobson also notes that this book was in the collection of Conservative politician Duff Cooper, a close friend of Belloc.
Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine and front board gilt, frame to boards in blind, publisher's device to rear board in blind, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Housed in a custom cloth-lined solander box.
Publisher's device to title page.
Corners bumped, slightly rubbed and marked overall and more noticeably so at upper outer corner of front board, traces of contemporary sticker removed from front board at foot, hinge starting between quires D and E, contents lightly toned as often. A good copy.
