Victories of the Duke of Wellington, from Drawings of R. Westall.London: Rodwell and Martin, 1819 Stock Code: 145539
One of the finest graphic tributes to the Iron DukeFirst edition of this wonderfully effective series of heroic images from the Iron Duke's triumphs in the Peninsula and at Waterloo, by one of the most popular and influential British artists of the period, comprising scenes of the battles of Vimiero, Talavera, Busaco, Salamanca, Vittoria, "the Pyrenees", Saint Sebastian, Toulouse, and Waterloo, and the capture of Oporto, Badajoz, and Madrid.
Perhaps a little overlooked in comparison with the more naturalistic school that followed him, Westall was, however, "a significant and innovative figure in the development of the English water-colour, his elegant and precise book illustrations set new standards in that field, and his portraits and historical and religious paintings have deservedly received more scholarly attention recently than hitherto" (ODNB). The present work is an excellent example of his work, reproduced by the method thought best to approximate to the effect of an original watercolour.

Wood-engraved title page trophy vignette by Peckham, and 12 hand-coloured aquatints plates by Thomas Fielding (11) and Charles Heath (1) after Richard Westall; watermarks: "J. Whatman 1819".
