In his first and most famous play, Beckett was already engaged in the creation of a 'purgatorial dystopia' (Bryce) for his characters, a theme that he would develop throughout his dramatic works. Originally published in France in 1952 as En attendant Godot, the play premiered in France on 5 January 1953 at the Théâtre de Babylone, Paris. The English language premiere was on 3 August 1955 at the Arts Theatre, London and on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre on 7 May 1956.
