Notes

First edition, first impression, of this collection of First World War poetry by T. W. H. Crosland. Crosland is notable as a fanatical Christian homophobe, who helped the hysterical hypocrite Lord Alfred Douglas to hound the supporters of Oscar Wilde, such as Robert Ross and Arthur Ransom, in the courts. He ghost-wrote Douglas's memoir Oscar Wilde and Myself in 1914. This copy has the illustrated bookplate of writer, raconteur and Scottish Nationalist (not himself a Scot) Sir Compton Mackenzie (1883-1972), author of Whisky Galore and Monarch of the Glen. At the time of this book's publication, Mackenzie was most famous for his hugely influential bildungsroman Sinister Street (1913-4), which influenced writers such as George Orwell. During the First World War he served with British Intelligence in the Eastern Mediterranean, being assigned to counter-espionage during the Gallipoli campaign, and basing himself in Athens, and founding the Aegean intelligence Service in 1917.
