Notes

First edition, a highly pertinent association copy with the engraved armorial bookplate of Sir William John Codrington (1804-1884) to the front pastedown. Codrington arrived in the Crimea in September 1854 with the rank of major-general, in command of the 1st brigade of the light division. He won the praise of Raglan for his conduct at Alma and Inkerman and was promoted commander-in-chief during the siege of Sevastopol following the resignation of Raglan's successor Simpson in November 1855. "He left the Peninsula on 12 July 1856, having received another parliamentary vote of thanks and been promoted lieutenant-general on 6 June 1856. Before he sailed, he also received the thanks of the Tartars of the Baidar valley for the protection given to them by the British troops" (ODNB).
"The Scottish ethnologist and diplomat Sir James (1812-86), who served as the British consul in Aleppo during the Crimean Conflict, writes much about the words and actions of the Stratford Cannon, 1st Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe (1786-1880), the British ambassador at Constantinople, but also provides a general narrative of the war. Skene himself made at least two visits to Sevastopol" (Cross).
