With the 'Aurora' in the Antarctic 1911-1914.Andrew Melrose, Ltd., London , 1919 Stock Code: 88744
NotesFirst edition. An uncommon book, particularly so in the jacket. "As captain of the Aurora during Mawson's 1911-14 expedition, Davis was able to produce one of the few first-hand accounts available in print. His publishers, however, clearly had wartime difficulties with the book, most often seen today with its gilt lettering and decoration badly faded" (Taurus). This is a very well-preserved copy with the design to the front board still bright, and the attractive jacket largely intact.
Octavo. Original blue buckram, title gilt to the spine and to front board together with a ship portrait. With the dust jacket.
Portrait frontispiece and 40 other plates, 5 maps as plates, numerous diagrams, sketches and maps to the text, some full-page, folding map at the rear.
Spine lettering oxidised, frontispiece with some short splits at the fore-edge, now professionally repaired, endpapers differentially browned, light toning and some marginal foxing, but overall very good in slightly rubbed and soiled jacket, lacking a few chips, but largely pictorially and textually complete.
