First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to Field Marshal George Francis Milne on the half-title, "For my much esteemed friend F. M. Lord Milne G.C.B. &c. Wishing him the complements of the Season & many many Happy New Years, Christmas 1944 - B". Milne was influential in the Second Boer War and the First World War, retiring in 1933.

During the Second World War he served as an Air Raid Warden in Westminster and wrote a weekly column for the Sunday Chronicle. Milne was a member of the Ashridge Dining Club, of which Bryant was president, and wrote to Bryant on receipt of the work thanking him "as a great admirer of your writings for your generous acknowledgement in your last book of the great work done for the country by Bernard Paget the dedicatee... I hope your next book will be Years of Achievement" (Paget). Years of Victory followed Bryant's 1942 patriotic history The Years of Endurance, 17931802, both works drew "clear parallels between Napoleon and Hitler, and England's heroic role in the Napoleonic wars was given a contemporary gloss" (ODNB). Both histories were widely read and "did much to raise public moral" throughout the war (ibid.).
